Rocking the Ozarks 2020

Being an Unemployed Self-Employed Creative

With the start of 2020 I was presented with an opportunity, while the world was slowly inching it's way into a global pandemic. Of course, I didn't see my situation that way as I was forced into the unemployment line in early January.

History

I have been a full-time self-employed creative since 2015, when I stopped touring in my then band, Seasons After. I started focusing on building my career and my family. Since then, my wife and I have purchased a home and have adopted four kids–all while both being self-employed.

Work had been steady for 14+ years, and when I got the news in January I was devastated. Exploring new opportunities and looking for employment after so many years of doing what I enjoyed, was extremely daunting. Luckily, I was blessed with enough revenue for 6 months. I had enough time to figure out what to do with the rest of my life.

The Pandemic

When Covid-19 began spreading, I was already hungry for new work. It's hard to be excited about the results of a pandemic, but I would be lying if I said that my sense of relief wasn't strong, knowing at least I wasn’t the only one looking for work. For the last few months I had been cleaning up my online presence and trying to connect with new people, reconnect with old ones, and building a foundation for something new.

Feeling a step ahead for the first time in several months, I decided it was time to take action and use my free time to develop something new. I wanted to do something that relies on community and local relationships to be successful. Something creative and informative, but also just something that I thought was cool. RockingTheOzarks.com was born and the ideas started flowing.

What's next?
